Courtney Atkinson Interview: The Season

You took out the 2010 London Triathlon after having some re-surfacing respiratory problems which had been inhibiting your recent performances. How good did it feel to take out this event and to be back running without any issues?
It was one big relief and at the same time a super surprise.I made a late decision to go and race simply to see where I was at. I would have been happy with just a strong 10km run.....to get off the bike and feel relatively good was a bonus and to win was one of those times that you really appreciate it because at the time I thought I would have no chance.
This race was a week out from Kitzbuhel, Austria. What where the key factors in your decision to race in London?
My sole reason to race in London was to get an idea where my form was at (and weather I could actually get through a race) to go to Kitzbuhel with some realistic expectations. I knew I wasn't back in the form to be fighting to win, but I want to know weather it was worth racing in Kitzbuhel to gather some much need World Championship Points.
How do you feel about your race in Kitzbuhel, Austria?
I am still optimistic after my race although still disappointed with the result. I always want to be trying to win, and I will no matter what position myself in the race to give myself every opportunity to try and win, but the 6 day turnaround from London was probably in hindsight way to much to ask of my body while still not 100%. Positives was that I had my best swim of the year coming out at the front and still had the speed to run the first 2.5km with the leaders. No I just have to work on getting some constancy back in training and the endurance and strength will return.

You're currently ranked 6th overall due to a rock solid season thus far barring the last few races. Tell us your thoughts on the season so far?
Well it all could have been very different. I am still 6th with really only 2 out of 4 results. Now I am just concentrating on getting the most amount of points out of the grand final and hopefully can jump up another few places to finish the year. There are always ups and downs, but I am very happy with the year. I proved I now have the run to match with the best and now I can go away for another off season and I am confident I can find more improvement again.

Random Question-
Do you have a favorite breakfast?
My wife's pancakes.....I can eat up to 8 or so in a sitting with everything from lemon, sugar, butter, jam and Nuttela on them. My daughter tries to match me....very funny!
